2015.08.02 Popularity of Book Club
It has been said people’s reading time has been decreasing in recent years and the waning interest in books is becoming a serious issue. Contrary to what people believe about the interest in books, lately "Book Clubs" are getting more popular in Japan. Book Club is the gathering of book lovers, discussing and interacting with others. There is a variety of Book Clubs across the country.

The editorial team of Magazine "AERA" created a reading club and has announced that they are going to host their first Book Club. They will invite the author, Ms. Areno Inoue and read her short story called “Niju ninme Ru-ru”. The date is July 18th.

Nekomachi Club is a Book Club which was born in Nagoya in 2006. A total of 5000 people have participated so far and it is one of the biggest Book Clubs in Japan. To join, members are supposed to finish reading the books ahead of time and share their thoughts at the meeting. Currently, they hold a monthly Book Club in Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto.

There are many kinds of Book Clubs available these days, one is held nationwide, others just for local communities. Some are held within companies and others can be participated through Skype. The merits of joining Book Clubs are getting to know new books that you would never think of reading and hearing other people’s opinions regarding the books. Why don’t you join a Book Club this summer?
