2015.08.23 Rakuten starts Print-On-Demand Service
Print-On-Demand (POD) service allows service providers to print and bind books starting from one copy as needed by utilizing a digital printer. Since there is no need to have inventory due to the nature of POD, they can reduce cost and labor of managing inventory. It seems that POD service is gradually expanding in Japan.

Rakuten's online bookstore called "Rakuten Books" started the POD service. To start this service, Rakuten partnered with Impress R&D because Rakuten does not have its own POD facility. At least one copy of all the titles will be stored at Impress’s other partner’s warehouse, and every time it ships a book, they will replenish the book so they always have one copy at hand.

POD service always has a few hundreds books available such as business books. After receiving an order, they ship the book on the same day. Users can also pick up books from the bookstores that participate in “Rakuten Books Rabid Delivery Service”.
