2015.11.27 The new Arabian Translation Award announced at the Sharjah International Book Fair
The 34th Sharjah International Book Fair started on Nov. 4 in Emirate of Sharjah, which is one of the states of the United Arab Emirates. This year, the purpose is to discuss business with Arab publishers, thus 200 international delegates were flown in. Attended by 1,547 publishers from 69 countries, this book fair has become increasingly global.

The new Sharjah Book Authority has announced an Arabic Translation Award to the 200 international delegates. Regarding this new Arabian Translation Award, it will be sponsored by Air Arabia and run by new Sharjah Book Authority which aims to become the “publishing hub” and free zone in the emirate. This award is to promote more translations of Arabian books into other languages. The delegate from Georgia explained that Georgia will be the country of honor at Frankfurt in 2018, and expressed their interests in this market as; “We are looking to translate Arab authors into Georgian --- the Arab market is so huge, it is important for us to meet them.” The total amount of the award will be 2 million UED ($563,000). The money split between author and translator is yet to be clarified.

At the book fair, Jacks Thomas, Director of the London Book Fair, interviewed novelist Ben Okri on stage. Many other events are also being held at the Sharjah Book Fair, along with awards being given out, including a warmly applauded posthumous Special Recognition award for the Egyptian novelist Gamal El Ghitani who died on October 18.
