2015.12.31 Launch sales of picture books in wholesale website ”SUPER DELIVERY”! Expectation of expanding to a new sales channel of publishers
Kaisei-Sha and Holp Shuppan publishing, launched sales of their picture books for retail shops on “SUPER DELIVERY”, a wholesale website run by Raccoon Co., Ltd.
Until now, the publishing industry has published books via bookstores. But their sales have floundered year-by-year due to the publishing recession at the time. Some big bookstores have tried developing their own sales channels like online bookshops, but the fact is that publishers are unable to develop a new sales channel that is separate from the bookstores.
Hence, these sales tactics by the two publishers might be the first step that is necessary for the publishing industry. According to the article, the publishing industry largely considers the main problem in expanding their sales channels stems from their increasing running costs and settlement trouble, and duplication of customers. However it’s thought that all those problems can be fixed using “SUPER DELIVERY”. In addition, the retail shops that are customers on “ SUPER DELIVERY” can also order some books tailored to their own shops’ themes and styles at a low amount as part of the merchandise mix, which brings about unprecedented choices.
Both publishers only deal with picture books presently; however, they plan to deal with other categories such as recipe books or art books in the future, while taking a watch and wait approach for the retail shops’ response. This approach has the potential to break free from the existing customs of trade and might establish a new sales channel for publishers.
