2016.08.30 Where will Amazon Unlimited go from here in the future?
Amazon the largest Internet mail-order company launched “Kindle unlimited” on August 3rd in Japan. You can read about 120,000 eBooks including comics as much as you like for 980 yen per month through the service.

While some netizens welcome the service, other netizens are worried about the future of the declining publishing industry in Japan.

A special feature of Amazon Unlimited is the distribution system in which a part of the profits from the all-you-can-read service is distributed to publishers based on viewing rates. In addition, although you can download eBooks on Kindle Unlimited through a dedicated app for a smartphone or tablet, you may only download ten eBooks at a time.

There are concerns among authors one after another that it might be difficult to keep doing such creative activities. In particular “they can earn revenue from the service based on the number of page views”, so authors will not be able to derive income from the service if the customers don’t read eBooks even after having downloaded them. Thus, some authors are cautious about Kindle Unlimited.

An attorney who is acquainted with the reality of the publishing business in Japan is concerned that publishers and authors might not be able to gain revenue that they should normally earn because Amazon will become the sole winner in the eBook market in Japan. She also says that she hopes that a unique service is enough to counter Amazon’s flat-rate service.
