2017.01.12 Rakuten Kobo to buy German e-reader platform
Rakuten Kobo Inc., a Canadian-based subsidiary of the Rakuten Group and an e-reader platform operator, has announced the acquisition of an e-reader platform system from Deutsche Telekom, the leading telecommunication provider in Germany. Specifics have not yet been released, but it is estimated that the sum paid will amount to billions of yen.

The deal involves the e-reader platform service “Tolino”. German booksellers Hugendubel, Thalia and Weltbild, together with Deutsche Telekom, launched the Tolino service in March 2013. Currently, the Tolino e-book service is said to be on par with Amazon’s Kindle in the German-speaking sphere.

Through this acquisition, Kobo will take over not only Tolino’s system development but also the e-reader platform service and the development of Tolino’s e-book devices. Kobo has indicated that the Tolino brand will continue to exist without change.

The German booksellers who were part of the founding and launch of Tolino have stated that they welcome Rakuten Kobo as a new partner.
