2017.05.25 Honorary Appreciation for Japanese Encyclopedia
The Japanese ‘Encyclopedia of Modern Sport’ (Taishukan Publishing Co., Ltd) won an Honorary Appreciation in the ‘Best Book Design from all over the World‘ competition organized by Stiftung Buchkunst (Book Art Foundation). The 600 or so books from 32 countries entered in this competition were displayed at the Leipzig Book Fair 2017, held in Germany this March.

The 21 entries from Japan were winners of the 50th ‘Japan Book Design Award’, organized by the Japan Book Publishers Association and the Japan Federation of Printing Industries. The Stiftung Buchkunst jury commended the ‘Encyclopedia of Modern Sport’ for overcoming the appearance of weight and size associated with traditional encyclopedias, by the lightly designed front cover using simple fonts, along with carefully selected inner paper. The layout of those pages gave the book an ‘attractive lightness’. The design lends functionality to the encyclopedia, and is in keeping with its topic of sport. The book is expected to be on display at Japan’s JINBOCHO Book Festival this November. The 51st Japan Book Design Award entry for Japan Book Design Award is open until May 12, for applicants whose books were published in 2016.

In 2015, ‘MOTION SILHOUETTE’ by Megumi Kajiwara and Tatsuhiko Niijima became the first book from Japan to win the Bronze Medal in the ‘Best Book Design from all over the World’. This year’s award given to the ‘Encyclopedia of Modern Sport’ is another significant result. These books can be found in the collection at Japan’s National Diet Library, and will be good references in editorial design.
