2017.06.01 Amazon UK’s £20,000 ‘Kindle Storyteller Award’
Amazon UK announced an award with a prize of 20,000 British pounds (approximately 25,826 US dollars) for self-publishers. The ‘Kindle Storyteller Award’ is welcoming entries from applicants over 18 from February 20 to May 19, 2017, for unpublished stories that are at least 5,000 words long and in English. The award is organized by the KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) division of Amazon UK. The author must participate in the KDP Select program in eBook and paper print publishing.

The competition’s organizer explains that selection process of the winner is largely in the hands of the readers. The official judges are currently undecided, however they will be specialists from inside and outside the Amazon company. The shortlist is to be announced in early June, and the winner in July in central London. It is planned for the winning book to be translated into at least one other language by the AmazonCrossing team.

This event attracts and involves both writers and readers from all over the world. Unlike traditional book fairs, which are focused around the publishing industry, anyone can easily access it via the internet. The publishing industry is changing around the internet, and eBooks have lowered the threshold for publication.

In Japan, Amazon received negative publicity last October over issues with its Kindle Unlimited initiative. Events such as Kindle’s Storyteller Award may help Amazon regain the trust of Japanese publishers and the public, and rekindle Amazon’s image as a major bookseller.
