2017.06.06 Books by Japanese Business Leaders popular in China
Bestselling books by Japanese business leaders are favored by Chinese readers, reported Mainichi Newspaper on May 8, 2017. In recent years, the Chinese book market has seen a rise in popularity of Japanese books on leaders in various fields or books written by top executives.

The book that has been most in demand this spring is the newly translated “Innovating Out of Crisis” (published in 2013 in Japan) by Shigetaka Komori, Chairman and CEO of Fujifilm Holdings Corporation. In this book, Mr. Komori recounts his journey of how he led Fujifilm from the brink of extinction of its core business and led it into a new direction. Professor Hirotake Ran of Musashino University, the translator of the book, told Mainichi Newspaper that books by famous Japanese CEOs’ are gathering attention and that amid the reformation of industrial structures in China, business people who have noticed that the traditional management style no longer works, now wish to find the answer from the experiences of Japanese predecessors.

Kazuo Inamori, the founder of Kyocera Corporation has published dozens of books, many of which have been translated into 19 different languages, including Chinese. He is admired as one of the ‘Japanese four masters of business management.’ His book, “Life – The Most Important Thing as a Human” sold more than 2.2 million copies in China, where any business book which sells more than 10,000 copies is considered a bestseller. Mr. Inamori’s books altogether have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, out of which, 6 million were sold in China. He was one of the 10 bestselling authors of translated books in China in 2012.

Sohachi Yamaoka’s “Tokugawa Ieyasu” was once very popular in China especially among business people, with total sales of 2 million. It was just after the Global Financial Crisis, and at the time it was said that people were interested in learning the life of Ieyasu who was known to be patient and full of wisdom.
