2017.07.04 ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ graphic novel to be published in 2018
In June 2017, it was announced that a project to create a graphic novel adaptation of Harper Lee’s 1960 novel, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, was underway. The novel deals with the complexity of people and society in a small town in Alabama, when racial discrimination was still very common. The graphic novel adaptation will be published on November 1, 2018, by William Heinemann in the UK and by HarperCollins in the US and Canada.

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ won a Pulitzer Prize in 1961. A screenplay was produced in 1962. It was translated into 40 different languages and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. It is described as a classic of modern American literature and one of the most popular novels taught in US high schools, though some schools have chosen not to use it as a teaching material for younger readers due to its inappropriate racial references. In Japan, it was translated by Shigesaburo Kikuchi and first published by Kurashi No Techo Sha in 1964. Even today, after more than 50 years, new editions are still being printed.

The graphic adaptation is being done by artist Fred Fordham, who recently illustrated Phillip Pullman’s ‘The Adventure of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship'.

Jason Arthur from William Heinemann said in their press release that ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ regularly topped polls as the ‘nation’s most beloved book’, and that they were ‘delighted that readers would be able to revisit it – or discover it for the first time – in graphic novel form’.
