2017.07.13 ReedPOP Vice President describes future direction of BookExpo America
At BookExpo 2017, Lance Fensterman, vice president of ReedPOP which organizes events such as BookExpo, BookCon, and Comic Con, spoke to the audience about his vision for BookExpo’s future. ‘We really want BookExpo to continue to be a vibrant and focused and very high-level, business-to-business platform where librarians and booksellers and rights professionals and publishers are able to gather and get business done,’ he said.

BookExpo, the largest book trade fair in North America, has become visibly smaller in recent years according to Publishing Perspectives, with ‘publishers [wondering] whether the convention was necessary in the Internet Age’. In contrast, BookCon, the consumer-oriented convention which follows BookExpo saw record attendance numbers in 2017. BookExpo’s event director Brien McDonald commented, ‘BookCon was created to support [the reader’s position] while [driving] value to BookExpo. These two worlds must coexist [and] one will not grow at the expense of the other.’

Fensterman was speaking in the first session of BookExpo’s conference programme. Other speakers of the session, including Nielsen (UK) and the Audio Publishers Association, presented research data. Apparently, the answer to his question on ‘how to make [BookExpo] relevant in [today’s] changing environment’ is yet to be found.
