2017.07.20 Sharjah is World Book Capital for 2019
UNESCO's director-general Irina Bokova has announced that Sharjah has been selected as the World Book Capital for the year 2019. According to Publishing Perspectives, the advisory committee of the World Book Capital program met at the headquarters of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) in the Netherlands and recommended the nomination to Bokova.

Sharjah is the third largest city in the United Arab Emirates. The city will be World Book Capital in 2019 from April 23, which is the United Nation’s World Book and Copyright Day, for the period of a year. Sharjah’s ruler, the Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, was also awarded the Simon Master Chairman’s Award at London Book Fair 2017.

Commenting on Sharjah’s proposed activity program, UNESCO’s announcement read, ‘The city’s objective is to foster a culture of reading in the United Arab Emirates and birth new initiatives to meet the challenge of literary creation in the area and in the rest of the Arab world.’

UNESCO began the World Book Capital program in 2001, following on from its World Book and Copyright Day which began on April 23, 1995, as a tribute to books and authors of the world. Sharjah will be the 19th World Book Capital.
