2017.08.15 Amazon to offer machine-translation service to clients
CNBC reported on June 26, 2017, that Amazon is preparing to make its machine-translation technology available to clients of its Amazon Web Service (AWS). The service could be announced before Amazon’s annual re:Invent conference in November, the report claims.

Amazon has been using this technology for the translation of its product information. The company also provides more than 70 cloud-based services, such as applications for e-mail and video conferencing, to its clients. These users of Amazon’s cloud services are potential clients of the proposed translation service, with which they can make their products multi-lingual. Many translation companies already use AWS for their operation.

AWS is a significant part of Amazon’s business, with which the company offers, for a fee, technologies originally developed for itself to other companies. According to statistics site Statista, the cloud segment accounted for about 10% of Amazon’s consolidated revenue in 2016.

In recent months, AWS has added newly developed, artificial-intelligence (AI)-reliant technologies to its service lineups, such as systems for image recognition and text to speech. Machine-translation will be one of them. The quality of the machine-translation in general has improved dramatically after the introduction of deep learning, a method to train the AI through a system of neural networks.
