2017.08.24 Iran Guest of Honor at BIBF 2017
The 24th edition of BIBF (Beijing International Book Fair) will be held from August 23 to 27 this year at the New China International Exhibition Center (NCIEC). This year’s guest of honor is, from the official website, ‘the “Islamic Republic of Iran”, also known as “Persia” in ancient times.’ Iran’s slogan is ‘Iran -- The Colorful Dream of Silk Road’.

According to The Publishers Association, in 2015, the Chinese book market was the second largest in the world in terms of purchasing power parity next to the US, and first in terms of volume. In 2013, official estimates for China’s publishing, printing and distribution services were 1.82 trillion yuan ($300 billion), increasing 9.7% from 2012.

This year’s reading ambassador for BIBF is author Liu Zhenyun, who will be visiting remote elementary schools in China to inspire children with the joy of reading. Liu has gained a great reputation worldwide, with his works translated into 28 different languages. One of his bestselling books, ‘I Did Not Kill My Husband’, has sold over 1.2 million copies, and many films have been produced based on his novels.

Last year’s BIBF, held at the BIPF (Beijing International Publications Forum), was a great success with guest speakers including Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Condé Nast International, a major global magazine publisher. An EBook2.0 Magazine writer, in an article for the Newsweek Japan website, noted the lack of Japanese presence in BIBF 2016 and emphasized that Japan would need to focus more on China due to the expansion of the Chinese market. This year, there appears to be a healthy lineup of Japanese publishers among the exhibitors at BIBF 2017.
