2017.11.14 Final Fantasy Ultimania Collection to see First English Translation
"Final Fantasy," one of the most popular role-playing games (RPG) in the world, debuted in Japan in 1987. Since then, sequels have been launched one after another, and this February, the series made the Guinness World Records as the "Most prolific role playing game" series. Although there is a huge following in the English-speaking world, the Japanese "Ultimania" books––a series of compilations of behind-the-scenes material from the games––had never been translated into English. This month, British comics publishing firm Dark Horse announced its plan to translate the three volumes of the "25th Memorial Ultimania," originally published in 2012.

Among "Final Fantasy" fans, the volumes are large, must-have tomes that contain material from the series' 25 year history, such as little-known data and interviews with the creators. Since there was no English version, readers who did not understand Japanese had to settle with partial translations that were available on internet fan sites. In the past, eager fans also petitioned unsuccessfully to have the books translated.

According to publisher Dark Horse, "This holy grail of Final Fantasy fandom is packed full of original concept art, process pieces, and notes from the original artists and designers […]. Containing a total of over three hundred pages collected in a high-quality hard-cover binding, Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive Volume 1 remains faithful to its original Japanese source material while simultaneously offering unparalleled accessibility for Western readers." It will go on sale next year in June, but sellers such as Amazon are already accepting pre-orders. The first English publication of the book was also announced at the New York Comicon. It is undoubtedly eagerly awaited by the games' large fanbase.
