2017.11.21 China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair
From November 17 to 19, the fifth China Shanghai International Children's Book Fair (CCBF) will be held at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center (SWEECC). This book fair is the only children's book fair held in Asia, and over 350 exhibits are expected from 35 countries and regions. More than one third of the exhibition area has been allotted to overseas publishers, and over 60,000 books are expected to be showcased including from countries that are exhibiting for the first time.

In China, the demand for children's books, especially for those before school age, has risen sharply due to the shift in its social structure. In its effort to reflect that trend, CCBF has increased the number of exhibitis which are geared for that age group.

According to CCBF's project manager Nichole Ci, currently China's population of those under 18 stands at 370 million. Furthermore, it is forecast that for the next five years, more than 3 million children will be born every year due to the recent "two-child policy". Ci says, "This growth, coupled with the rise of the middle classes and new educational reforms promoting reading for pleasure, means there is a huge appetite amongst consumers for high quality content."

CCBF also hosts a six-day fellowship program called SHVIP. There was a similar undertaking at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Likewise, SHVIP will provide a platform for the fellows, comprising 11 children's book specialists from various countries, to expand their business networks by exposing them to various publishers in Shanghai as they deepen their knowledge of the industry's business landscape. CCBF will start accepting applications for next year's fellowship program from the spring of 2018.
