2017.11.30 Osaka's BOOK EXPO 2017: A Business Meeting for Bookstores
On November 7, 2017, "BOOK EXPO 2017—Battle of Fall—Resound! The Soul of the Bookstore*" was held in Osaka. It's an event which is free to attend for anyone who works in a bookstore, and is a business platform aimed at bookstores, agencies, and publishers. This year marks the seventh for this event, and 243 booths—its largest number yet—were exhibited by 233 companies. The negotiated amount in business deals is expected to exceed 100 million yen.

At BOOK EXPO, participants can freely approach publishers' booths and directly hold business dealings without the intervention of an agency. A web catalogue lists recommended products by various publishers, and offers small, local publishers an opportunity to sell their books to bookstores. Even if an actual deal isn't closed, hearing the opinions and requests of bookstores, which work in close contact with real consumers, should serve as a useful reference in deciding future publications.

There were also signing sessions and talk events by popular authors. At the children's books corner, there was picture book author duo "tupera tupera" (Tatsuya Kameyama and Atsuko Nakagawa), known for "Polar Bear’s Underwear." At the main hall there was Arisu Arisugawa, author of "Maboroshizaka" which received the "5th Osaka Real Book Award.*" Bookstore employees display these autographs at their stores in the hope of stimulating sales.

Under the title of “West Japan King of POP Decider,*” a contest to choose the best POP (point-of-purchase) display—displays set up in bookstores for sales promotion purposes—was held. Also on display were the books "How to Make the Best Flavored Boiled Egg in the World*" and "New Sweets by Shirasaki Chakai,*" both recipients of the "4th Recipe Books in Japan Award.*" In addition, dictionary-related events were introduced by the “Dictionary Reading Project.*”

BOOK EXPO provides a platform for effective information exchange geared for bookstores in the Kansai area as well as for publishers. Information in Japan tends to be concentrated in the Tokyo area, but it's hoped that with further development of Osaka's BOOK EXPO, local bookstores will continue to thrive.
