2018.03.27 Enjoying Audiobooks through Vinyl Records
In the United States, where the audiobook market is more established than in Japan, audiobooks have begun to be sold as vinyl records. A new range of vinyl audiobooks was released by Hachette Audio and Wax Audio Group, with the first title being "This is Water," a speech by David Foster Wallace.

The U.S. has seen a surge in the popularity of vinyl records in the past few years. The sales of records in 2017 comprised 14 percent of all albums, totaling 14.32 million records. This was a 9 percent increase compared to the previous fiscal year, based on Nielsen research. According to Jeff Bowers of Wax Audio Group, the audiobook market has reached almost $3 billion in sales. Furthermore, 48 percent of the customers' ages range from 18 to 35, and 57 percent listen at home. Anthony Goff of Hachette Audio says, “There is no better time than now to expand our catalog with an audio format that has seen amazing resurgence.”

The new range features many audiobooks where the content is spoken by the actual author. For titles where the content is too long to fit into the record, codes to download the entire digital version will be provided.

Audiobooks are often seen as something to be enjoyed on smartphones in our in-between free time. However, maybe the act of in-depth “book-listening” through records at home is a cutting-edge way to appreciate books, despite its anachronistic appearance.
