2018.04.03 U.K. Children’s Books Translation Award Shortlist Announced
The finalists for the 2018 In Other Words award have been announced by Book Trust, U.K’s largest children’s reading charity, which aims to enrich lives through reading. This award is specifically for translated works. The eight finalists were chosen out of almost 200 entries; from these, "honour" titles which show strong potential for commercial publication will be chosen and announced at the London Book Fair in April.

This translation award—first conferred in 2017—was launched to promote the publication in the U.K. of translated works of children’s literature from around the world. Partial translations of the eight finalists can be viewed, and English publishing rights are available for purchase. Additionally, a subsidy of 1500 pounds will be granted from Book Trust for the publication of these books in the U.K.

The 2018 finalists include "an adventure with a badly-behaved gang of thieves set in Finland; a story about immigration and tolerance set in Switzerland; a laugh-out-loud tale of dinosaurs running amok in Iceland, and more." Of last year's honour titles, three will be on sale in the U.K. from April 2018.

Speaking of the award, Nicolette Jones, who is serving as the chair of the review committee, said, “I continue to believe in the value of In Other Words as a way of opening minds and opportunities, and enriching UK publishing with global stories… It was clear from the submissions that there is a great deal of storytelling talent abroad that British children have been missing.”
