2018.06.08 Popular Children’s Biography Series Now Available on U.S. Netflix
From May 11, Netflix started airing a program based on The Who Was? biography book series, which has a strong following among American children. The show has a total of 13 episodes and two historical figures will be featured per show. The production highlights a diverse teenage cast with sketch comedy, impersonations, animation, and music videos making it enjoyable for children.

The Who Was? is published by the world’s largest publishing firm Penguin Random House, which currently boasts more than 150 titles. Furthermore, that number will grow to more than 200 titles if The Where Is? and The What Was? are included, which are both derived from The What Was? series that describe landmarks as well as historical events. The first edition was published in 2002 and four figures—Annie Oakley, Benjamin Franklin, Albert Einstein and Sacagawea—were featured. Earlier biographies were picture books that were either too simple or too dense that targeted middle school students. There are no other biographical book series such as The Who Was? that include illustrations yet that is still accessible to middle school students. In addition, it contains more than 100 pages and it is worth reading.

The book cover of The Who Was? shows the featured figure drawn with a big head that leaves an instant impression. It is hoped that children will swap the books with each other like how they do with baseball cards, so they could read more. It was turned into a film as a result of taking the fans’ opinions into account, and let’s all hope that children can enjoy learning with their parents.
