2018.06.13 Amazon to Sell Patricia Cornwell’s New Series from 2019
According to the May 29 article by The Bookseller, the US mystery author Patricia Cornwell signed a two-book deal with Amazon. The first book, Quantum, is slated to be released in 2019, and its sequel will be published in 2020. This deal will allow Amazon to obtain exclusive English rights for Cornwell’s new works around the world.

Cornwell shot to fame through Postmortem (1990) and received several awards starting with Edgar Award for Best First Novel, and the Crime Writer’s Association (CWA) Gold Dagger, etc. The series has had a strong following with the medical examiner Kay Scarpetta as the protagonist, and its 24th sequel has been sold in 2016. In Japan too, the Kay Scarpetta series has been a blockbuster, and at the point of 2016, more than 13 million copies have been sold.

In 2014, through Amazon’s Kindle Single, Cornwell published an essay on Jack the Ripper where she traces the killer’s steps on her own. In 2017, her non-fiction book on Jack the Ripper was published, becoming Amazon’s bestseller. The protagonist in her new Quantum is a woman test pilot of NASA and an aerospace engineer. The plot is about uncovering the truth of the death of her twin sister, who is a fighter pilot.

Through self-publishing measures and “all-you-can-read” schemes, Amazon has been successful in closing the gap between authors and readers. On the other hand, they have struggled to sign deals with famous writers due to the stiff competition from its competitors. The deal with Cornwell will not only have a strong impact on attracting customers, but it may encourage other well-known authors to sign with Amazon too.
