2018.10.11 Wal-Mart partners with Rakuten Kobo to launch e-book service
US Logistics giant Wal-Mart Rakuten announced on 22nd August that they would be providing e-book service "Walmart eBooks by Rakuten Kobo" in the United States. Rakuten's subsidiary Kobo (head office, Toronto, Canada) is an e-book company operating worldwide. American consumers will be able to purchase Rakuten Kobo's e-books, audio books, and e-book terminals through Wal-Mart.

Rakuten Kobo has more than 6 million contents, and Wal-Mart customers can access these using Kobo-sold devices and specialized apps. Becoming an Audiobook member for $9.99 per month grants you free access to an audiobook each month. A similar service provided by Amazon, "Audible", is available for $14.95 per month, making Wal-Mart's service advantageous in terms of price, although Wal-Mart's service provides fewer functionalities.

However, according to Forbes journalist Andria Cheng, Wal-Mart's aim is not the sale of lots of ebooks. Although Amazon succeeded by securing large numbers of Prime members who buy more expensive products, Wal-Mart seeks customers looking for discount items, in addition to diversifying its sales and product lineups and the customer base in order to expand its market share. It is also reported that the company is also rapidly increasing products as part of its aim to attract new customers.

Book sales have emerged as one strategy of a global retailers fiercely competing to secure the market share. As part of this trend, attention will also focus on whether there are new strategies to halt the declining publishing market.
