The first book in the World Adventurers Series, Kilimanjaro: One Man's Quest to Go Over the Hill chronicles my attempt to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. At forty years old and on the verge of a midlife crisis, I tried to change my life by climbing a mountain. This is my true story of facing Kilimanjaro and other challenges at middle age.
An unhappy diplomat in a job that left me disillusioned and frustrated, I decided in 2010 to scale Africa's tallest peak to jumpstart my life. At the time I considered resigning from the Foreign Service to follow my true passion, writing, and believed that a climb of this magnitude would give me the fortitude I needed to pursue a better future.
I started the climb at the end of 2010 filled with hope but soon learned on the slopes of Kilimanjaro the harsh reality of how difficult it was to climb. The mountain known as “Everyman’s Everest” threw more obstacles at me than I could have ever anticipated, leaving me not only struggling to reach the summit but grappling with my own well-being. A brutal test of emotional and physical strength, Mount Kilimanjaro became the challenge of my life.
This memoir is for anyone who feels over the hill and needs encouragement to make a change in the face of difficult odds. It's also for the casual climber or hiker who is interested in climbing one of the world's tallest mountains. Filled with insights and advice for those who are contemplating their own Kilimanjaro climb, this book will put the reader on the mountain and inspire them to go over it.
Kilimanjaro: One Man's Quest to Go Over the Hill earned an honorable mention from the 2012 Global Ebook Awards. The book features more than 60 photos from the author's trek.
